Problems with long file names

I have a great number of image folders on an external hard drive back up. I want to put them back on my PC hard drive to reorganse them but when I try to copy them to the hard drive many of them cannot it be copied becauuse"the file name is too loong for the destination." They were on the hard drive initianally so why can't I put them back there?
