It would help to know what you are going to use it for...

Motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128423

The rest you should be looking at 6gb DDR 3 (3x2gb), two GTX 460 1gb GPUs in SLI setup. Samsung spinpoint 1tb harddrive. 700watt power supply, case of your choice. (with that budget, you also have the option to get an SSD or a velociraptor for lightning quick response of your main apps)

x58 motherboard :250$ (asus p6t ?)
6gb 2000 mhz : 250$ (g.skills)
Computer case : 175$ ( antec 1200 )
Power supply 150$ ( antec 750 )
HDD 100$ ( samsung spinpoint f3 1000gb)
5870 400$ (xfx for lifetime warranty)

I think you can get a solid computer with 1400$

I'll come back later to link you the best parts, I'm leaving school right now.

Here's my build:

Gigabyte X58 motherboard - this motherboard supports your CPU, up to 24GB of RAM at up to 2200MHz, and dual graphics cards at x16. $199.99
G.SKILL Ripjaws 3x2GB 2000MHz Kit - this RAM is very fast and 6GB is enough for quite some time. $174.99
XFX HD 5870 - ATI's fastest single core GPU. Get two of these - it'll be amazing in any game at maximum settings and very high resolutions. $379.99 x 2 = $759.98
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB - fast, high capacity drive. You could get a Samsung for the same price but I've always had Western Digitals and nothing's ever gone wrong with any of them. $74.99
LG 22x DVD Burner - there's really no need to spend any more on your DVD drive as this one burns all types of DVD at high speeds. $19.99
Coolermaster GX Series 750W PSU - reliable PSU with enough power for your system. $79.99
Coolermaster HAF 922 Case - personally, I prefer this to Antec's offerings, I think it looks great, and it has excellent cooling with its 200mm fans. $89.98

That's it. You've got an amazing build there, with high speed everything and super fast CrossfireX graphics cards. The price: $1399.91. Man, you just need to spend $8c more and you've got a perfect price point ;)

or that.

both would offer great performance, depending on the cash you wish to spend.

but buying two 5870's at once seems pointless when you can get a 5970 for less, or two GTX470 for better performance.

Two 5870s offer better performance than the 5970 as they run at higher speeds. Of course, that would depend a bit on the game and how well it works in Crossfire setups.

Taking Welsh's post into account, I'd recommend that you get two of these instead of the 5870s as they offer better scaling. Although the 5870 is better as a single card, these would probably be better in SLI, especially as those are the superclocked editions :pt1cable:

Cheaper too :) and everything else in my original post is still what I would recommend.

Well I guess it's up to the OP and what he thinks lol
Two 5970s would be stupid anyway because there's probably like one game which supports quad GPUs. You'd end up effectively only having one and then wondering why you spent so much on your graphics cards xD

Yeah I guess that might be the best solution. You're getting almost as much power as a 5870 CF setup and one 5970 is still more than enough! xD
