okay now I am rotflmao, I did it ...finally

Anyway. Consider: Story, Acting, soundtrack, special affects, cineamatography(sp?)
I believe "the Return of the King" is the best movie I have ever seen.
And the trilogy, well it is in a class all by itself.

Now that I think back to it, it really WAS a seriously awesome movie.

Perhaps there was so much, that I'd need to rewatch it to rate it right. Either way I'll get the extended DVD and watch over 4 hours of it heh.

It's #3 on IMDB's top 250 movies of all time, below The Shawshank Redemption and The Godfather. My belief is that The Shawshank Redemption is the greatest movie of all time, but it is too hard to compare it with Lord of the Rings. The 3 LOTR movies are amazing films, some of the best ever made, but in terms of all time favorite Shawshank is still #1 for me. To me, The Shawshank Redemption is perfect, completely without flaws.

I was utterly awed at the battle scene in Return of the King. Completely amazing (except the "I am no man!" part, how corny). I was so happy that it was so long, and even though the ending dragged on for about 30 minutes after I thought the movie was over, I liked it because it brought the whole thing together and truly ended it.

It's pretty cool that they have all 3 lotr made IMDB's top 10 list.
Shawshank is a great movie, what movie won the Oscar instead of Shawshank?
In reality it would be hard to pick 1 movie as "The Greatest" but it is good to see different opinons.

Phhh, Forest Gump won it over Shawshank. What a travesty... Gump was okay, but definately not better than Shawshank. Kinda like how gay ass Titanic got the Oscar over any of the other nominees. I think on IMDB, Titanic is the lowest rated best picture winner, and for good reason.

I said yes, even though it's impossible to tell between the best movies.

About "Titanic"
LOl I wonder how many guys saw it just to make their wives or girlfriends happy
I like Forest Gump, but it is hard to believe that it is better than Shawshank, of course most of the time the Oscars seem more political, and seldom do they get the best movie, especially lately.

Yes , even My wife wants to see the "special edition" of ROTK. My 15 year daughter and 14 year old son love all the LOTR movies too.
I think we are planning to watch the whole LOTR special edition dvds next year back to back.
That will be over 11 hours  maybe 12

Haven't watched The Shawshank Redemption, but IMO the Godfather: part-1 is perfect from every point of view

It's definitely not the best. It was good but not the best.

I don't think it holds a candle to other movies like Schindler's List, Shawshank Redemption, Jaws, The Godfather, Saving Private Ryan, Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind, or Star Wars. That's not quite 10 but I'm sure I could come up 3 more.

Was there that much crying in the book? I liked the movie but the crying got very old.

I'd probably put Requiem for a Dream, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and Raiders of the Lost Ark above ROTK as well.

I can't wait for the extended DVD's to come out for all 3 movies though.

If you were to make a poll for best trilogy I'd probably put it at 3rd though right behind Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

Its been a long time since I have read LOTR, over 20 years.
I think the crying in the movie didn't exactly happen in the book but the emotion was there. I could be wrong.

I love all those movies you mentioned, I think they all are great. Saving Private Ryan sure made me appreciate our W.W.II Veterans more(like my Dad)
It is very hard to compare good movies and say one is better.
But 3 1/2 hours never went so fast.
Bob

Reply to lisabob2

Both are very good, but comparing everything I cannot put those trilogies in the same class as LOTR.
I think I would put Indiana Jones above Star Wars, close though.
The LOTR is much more complicated.
I think the Actors in the LOTR have more depth.
And of course it is not fair to compare special affects, but they are so good in LOTR. So much better than SW & I.J.
I love the Star wars & Indiana Jones trilogies.
It just seems to me that LOTR is better.

It's not fair to compare special effects.

It's all so abstract since some movies I like because they are entertaining, others are so realistic, others are drama, and others I just enjoy the cinematography.

Ever see the Thin Red Line? Lousy movie but the cinematography is amazing!

It isn't fair to compare special effects, I agree.
I pretty much agree with you on everything but a little difference on LOTR.
It is hard to compare, I like most movies, but some I would love to see more than others.

I think that bar none LOTR is the best trilogy ever. Indiana Jones was good, but Temple of Doom I thought was pretty bad, which brings down the whole trilogy. Star Wars is good, but not great, in my opinion. LOTR is amazing.

The LOTR movies are all in my top 10. In no particular order, (except Shawshank), I'd put:

Shawshank Redemption
The Big Lebowski
Fargo
American Beauty
Pulp Fiction
Return of the King
Fellowship of the Ring
Two Towers
Traffic
The Usual Suspects

There may be a couple I'd switch if I thought it some more, but the LOTR definately belong on the top 10 of all time.

Rented Godfather I & II.
After watching Godfather I, I have to say it was very good movie. I had seen it before but on t.v.
But to be honest, I don't think you can fairly compare Godfather to any of the LOTR movies.
Very different, but the LOTR does so many things better, special effects, soundtrack, cinematography(sp?)
Acting is a draw, I believe.
Al Pacino was great in Godfather. Ian McKelllan is great in LOTR, so is Sean Astin. Marlon Brando, that says alot just by itself.
Some Contratimes online newspaper called LOTR cast "workmanlike" and wasn't in the same league as Godfather.
I think if I were to be honest, LOTR definetly has edge in acting. But both were great so I could see how somebody would favor the acting in one movie over the other one, but to say one movies actors did a "workmanlike " job is showing obvious prejudice.
Return of the King is still my favorite all time.

Someone mentioned crouching tiger hidden dragon... Isn't that the one where a bunch of chinese kung fu fighter dudes run around on tree branches. I thought that was the worst movie ever. Other than that there have been some great picks here IMO. Personally I like the old classic (the good the bad and the ugly) pulp fiction was great too, but my folks hated it.

If I glanced at a spilt box of tooth picks on the floor, could I tell you how many are in the pile. Not a chance, But then again I don't have to buy my underware at Kmart.

Actually liked II better until the frigging ending.
I still think LOTR is the best trilogy ever.
Nothing is even close and I love Star Wars and Indiana Jones. But they just aren't in the same class as LOTR.
I am going to see ROTK again.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is a great movie. Did you watch it dubbed? You have to watch it in Chinese, with subtitles, to fully appreciate it. I think the dubbed version takes away from the movie.

HAHAHAHA. As morbid as it is, that's one of the funniest scenes out of any movie. I do find myself always making cracks about it.

I went and saw Return of the King again today.

Far too much crying. I love the action, but every single time the scene turns to Frodo and Sam, I cringe. All they did was cry.

Its british but don't let that fool you. Did you ever see snatch with brad pitt. Snatch was based off of lock stock and two smoking barrrels. Belive me it's awesome but it can be difficult for some people to catch all the phrases (soft as shight = stupid as s h - i t) with strong british dialect. If you can figure out what they are saying it should be one of your favorite movies ever if you liked most of the other picks in here.

Its about some pretty wild guys in their late twenties who live of small crime and lets just say they try and improve their standard of living and get in a little over their heads.

I just loved that movie it was way better than snatch and if you can understand the british lingo I think you will love it too so rent it, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
