IDE optical drive with sata HDD

Hi guys, im about to go to a friends house with my spare optical drive that he needs. My drive only has IDE connectors and im pretty sure his harddrives are sata.

Will this be as easy as plug and play? or will i need extra steps?

Do you know if the motherboard on your friends computer has IDE connectors? If yes, then it should work. If not, you can try an adapter such as: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812226024

If you do go the adapter route(no IDE port) then remember to set the IDE drive to Master. Many users forget that then those adapters fail to work.

I had had boards with IDE and SATA(AMD and Intel platform) and it was never an issue to run both side by side.
