Do I need a case fan?

I am running a system with:

Amd Phenom x4 965 3.4ghz
4GB DDR3 Ram
ASRock M3A785GMH/128M motherboard
ATI Radeon HD 4200 inbuilt graphics
Samsung 1TB HDD
500w Arctic PSU

I had this system built for me and was wondering how vital the case fan is? It's really loud so will be replacing it with a quieter one but is this 100% necessary to keep it cool?

  1. having at least one case fan to help move the hot air out is always a good idea. you can always hook it up to cheap controller to help keep fan noise down.

antec tri-cool fans come with their own controllers as do some others
  2. You absolutely want at least one case fan. You don't need a really loud one though - several are available that are nearly inaudible.
  3. Also, a larger fan will move more air at a slower speed and will be quieter than a smaller fan running faster.
  4. Ok, thanks, didn't realise how cheaply you could get a really quiet one for!
