first of all, I've heard that dvi is capped at 60 hz. is this true?

and to the main question, will the question in the title work? or is dvi a better option? my display does indeed have speakers but I mainly use my headphones.

sorry if I put this in the wrong section.

DVI = HDMI without sound. The pins are exactly the same wire for wire except HDMI looks different and has a couple more to carry sound.

They both have the same bandwidth which can carry a signal of 1280x1024 at up to 85hz, or on the other end of the spectrum only 60hz for 1920x1200.

Im not sure what you are asking in the title. If you are asking if HDMI would increase bandwidth, then no because they are the same. Also can your display even do 120hz? Simply getting a better cable won't increase refresh rate. You must have a monitor cappable of that to begin with.

If you already have a 120hz cappable monitor, you should be using a Dual Link DVI cable with twice the bandwidth of normal DVI or HDMI. Which can do 1920x1080 @ 120hz or 2560x1600 @ 60hz

the monitor i'm intending to buy (1680x1050 @120hz) has 1 DVI port and my 4870HD has 2. what should I do to make the speaker work, and make my monitor run at 120hz? also I think it says on the manual that only 1 DVI port on the 4870 works for HDMI. I use my headphones mostly but it would be nice to have some speakers too.
