Linking a laptop with my home pc

I have an old DELL inspiron 4000 laptop and i would like to link to my home pc which has a Intel core 2 cpu runing at 1.86GHZ and is op windows vista, both have an ethernet link up how to to link them,when i tryed my main pc never picked up the laptop

You must turn off firewall in both machines when establishing a link.

In addition to what fihart suggested, if you're not using a switch, router or hub, you'll need a crossover cable. A regular ethernet cable won't work if you're connecting a PC directly to another PC. I hope this helps.

As long as one of them is a modern PC, it's highly likely it supports auto-mdix making a crossover cable unnecessary.
