Do i have to take permission from my broadband provider for setting up a wireles

i am in a wired campus and have a LAN in my hostel room. can i set up a wireless router ?
do i need permission from my university or LAN provider? i have to buy the router so i am wondering

The system administrator on the campus may be able to detect if you install a router and -- if it's against the terms of use (which it sometimes is) -- you could have wasted your money. Ask the college (?) bursar or student rep.
