HD 4870 is as faster card, but 5770 runs cooler, quieter and has less power consumption; furthermore, it packs newer techs like DX11,Eyefinity etc

Generally speaking, DX11 requires a little more processing power than DX10.

Therefore, if pure performance is what you want then get the HD 4870.

if you don't really care about DX11 going for 5770 is not bad either. basically in dx9/10 games the pure performance is on par with 4870. but if you want to play dx11 with nice eye candy and frames rates don't go lower than 5850

I'd go ATI 5770. Performance is really neck & neck with the 4870 all in all.

Yes it will suck for DX11 performance at high resolutions. But you don't have to use DX11. :)  Games will allow you to designate DX10, at which point the card should perform like the ATI 4870 anyhow.

@ 1680x1050 resolution the ATI 5770 is the way to go.

@ 1920x1080 (or higher) I'd go ATI 5850 if you can afford it.

@ DX11 Gaming - ATI 5850 or ATI 5870 are in order.

I agree with all the angles mentioned on why NOT to buy the 4870. Its going on two years old. Driver optimization focus will always be on the newer hardware. Idle power management is much better with the 40nm gpu's. With a huge market of 5770's its easier to find a bargain price than the 4870 right now. So unless its a private sale or a lucky find, its hard to not recommend 5770.

4870 is faster, but with HD5770 we'll last longer, less power consumption and less heat... :)
