Graphics Memory Requirement for SLI

I know that when you pair up two cards for SLI, they share the given memory, e.g. two cards with one gig each with act as a single card with one gig. My question is how much memory is it necessary to play games at 1920x1020 with medium to high detail? 512 or 1 gig or 2 gig?

Can you clarify what you mean when you said "depending on the game"?

My 8800GT's only have 512MB and I game @ 19x10 with medium to high details, depending on the game of course.

C.O.D: MW2 for instance, will run @+70fps with pretty much everything maxed but BF: BC2 @ default settings struggles to maintain 30fps.

At that resolution you will gain from the additional memory going from 512Mb to 1GB If you turn on Eye candy (AA & AF). In raw hp that is without AA & AF the cards would play about the same.
