Hey guys. I've been playing UT for years and this reoccuring problem
seems to get worse the more I upgrade my system. First things firsts:
AMD XP 2400+, 1 gig pc 133, GeForce FX 5900XT/recent drivers
Now under D3D, UT just does not run well. Changing reolutions or color
bits will cause the game to hang for about 2 minutes, as well as
minimizing or maximizing the window. Not only that, but I seem to get
sluggish framerates when ingame.
On the other hand, OpenGL runs absolutely fantastic. The game runs
smooth ingame, and the menus do not hang.
Obviously I'll stick to OpenGL as it looks cleaner than D3D and performs
better on my system, but has anyone else had this problem with D3D?

OpenGL with the high res textures installed is better, just ignore
D3D.

Yep, most of the civilized world has had the D3D bug with UT99 and
have switched to OGL. Symptoms are exactly as you describe.

never really experienced that problem on any of the machines I have ever
used. d3d and opengl perform pretty much the same for me.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this problem.
I just bought a Geforce FX 5200 to hold me over until the 6800's come out.
Previously I had a Geforce 2 MX 400 which I thought may have been the
culprit. However, I had the same problem with the new card in Direct 3D as
the old one which had me worried. Luckily, it was a good thing I got the
new video card cause I was having problems with the Geforce 2 with random
lockups and graphical errors at times. Unfortuantly, I was hoping to put it
into another computer which only has an onboard S3 chipset (yuck). Guess
come fall when I have some money I'll get me one of those shiney 6800's and
put the 5200 in the other one (didn't have the extra 60 bucks for a 5500 or
5700 LE).
