Home system shutting down immediately when I start a game

Hey folks,

I am encountering a problem where my computer turns off immediately after beginning the Elder Scrolls Oblivion (game of the year edition) PC game. It's an immediate shutdown, no error message or blue screen, and no reboot. I had been playing the game at max settings (2560x1600 res on my 30" monitor, HDR lighting, max settings, no AA or AF) without any problems whatsoever. I modded the game (with a very comphresensive mod called FCOM) and was still able to play. I added an additional mod component, something that adds traveling merchants to the game, and is not a graphics mod. Now, the game shuts down as I describe. Note that I was able to play this game without any difficulty, on the same hardware I am using, until now.

In troubleshooting, I deleted my Oblivion configuration file, which reset all my settings to basic level. In bumping up the video resolution, I find that my system shuts down immediately when I go above 1280x1080 resolution. I have no idea why.

I really don't know what the problem could be, as my computer specs are good enough to play this game. I'll post my DXdiag below.

Any troubleshooting tips would be appreciated.

I do plan on cleaning out my case, checking to see that all fans are working, and testing system temperatures. Because my system shuts down immediately upon starting the game (i.e., in the game, not at the menu screens), I tend to think it's not temperature related, as my system hasn't had time to heat up. I also don't think it's a sound/soundcard issue, as there is no stuttering or lockups/looping.


Oblivion aside, what are the best ways to troubleshoot a problem like this- immediate system shutdown upon game starting, and what problems does a shutdown like this indicate?

My system specs are well up to the task of playing this game, and have been doing so, even with intensive graphics overhauls (Qarl's Texture Pack, Nearly Everything Visible When Distant). So....I got nuthin.

Even if you don't know what the error might be, any tips on maintenance (beyond using compressed air to clean out my system and checking that my fans are working) would be appreciated.

Your C: drive is very full, and you could be encountering pagefile errors. Clean it up and defrag.

Also, please disconnect any external drives or other storage devices while troubleshooting.

Yes, Oblivion is the only game doing this. Recently played Metro2033, Just Cause 2, X3: Terran Conflict, and Aliens vs. Predator at similarly high settings with no problems. I built this system a few years ago, and earlier this year swapped out my GTX 8800 for an ATI Radeon 4800.

Here are my specs:

The C drive I have Oblivon installed on has (I think) about 15G free, and I defragged and cleaned it before I installed Oblivion to it. I can defrag it again, though.

I will disconnect external drives and other storage next time I troubleshoot.

I would do a few things.

I would completely clean both the graphics and sound drivers off and re-install the latest, and don't forget Alchemy.

I would try some registry repair tool.

But really, some core file of your game probably just got corrupted during the mod installation. Save your game saves and re-install.

What registry repair tool would you suggest.

Not ready to reinstall- want to exhaust all other options first. FCOM Oblivion is a pretty complex install.

Update- Disabled all the mods for the game but my computer is still crashing.

To troubleshoot, so far I have removed and reinstalled my ATI Catalyst drivers, opened my case and cleaned all the dust, and have my case door open.

The computer shuts down before the game's mod content has even loaded...I know this because the shutdown occurs before any mod messages of slipstream loading (the 'ding' sound and the change I made from 75 to 90 degree FOV)

Looking at my ATI Overdrive tab and now my temp is 62 degrees, 0% actviity, and 25% fan speed
Looking at Core Temp, and now Core 0 and Core 1 are each 65 degrees- low 64 and high 78

I was running the Furmark GPU stress test and my computer shut down about 2/3rds through it. When I rebooted, Firefox had updated itself, so I am not sure if the shutdown was due to my comptuer crashing or Firefox obnoxiously restarting. The Furmark test was taking up the entirety of the screen.

My Core 0 temp was 77 during the test and my Core 1 temp was 75. My ATI temp was 77 during the test.

Those are incredibly high core temps for a C2D. They are very much in the red. Is that according to HWmonitor? What program? They can report up to 10C difference so it's important to use one of the standards.

Regardless of whether this is the issue, if you are actually idling over 50C you need to remedy that right away.

Yes, I think my CPU and possibly GPU are overheating. I ran the Furmark GPU benchmark and once again my computer shut down. My CPU temps were at 78 and my GPU temp was at 78. I was monitoring CPU with Core Temp and GPU with the ATI Overdrive tool. When the system is idle, CPU temp is around 65.

I built this machine a few years ago and it has run every game I've installed on it (mostly flight sims, first person shooters, and RPGs), at very high settings, and at 25600x1600. All my fans are working, and I've cleaned the dust out of the case. The computer is in the same room it's always been in.

So, I've no idea why this is becoming a problem now. About 6 months ago, I did swap out my NVIDIA 8800GTX with an ATI HD Radeon 4800. I don't know if the ATI card is more prone to overheating.

The computer is running every other game but FCOM (and now vanilla) Oblivion without difficulty.

What suggestions do folks have for addressing this?

It's definitely not an Oblivion-related problem. My system just shut down while I was watching a video. Not good.

So, if it's overheating this way, and no fans seem dead, what's going on, and how to fix?

A friend thinks its my PSU, and I think he might be correct. I ran the SpeedFan app on my 700W OCZ GameXStream Power Supply, which apparently should be running at 12V. Here are the results:
From Speedfan:

Vcore: 1.41V
+12V: 9.82V
AVcc: 3.20V

System: -65C
CPU: 58C
AUS 41C
Core 0: 60C
Core 1: 60C

Any thoughts, and suggestions for a good replacement, if that's what I need?

No. The ONLY way to test a power supply is with an actual volt meter while the PSU is under load. Software voltage readings are USELESS.

You have accurate CPU temps that clearly spell out an issue. Don't get side-tracked.

Intel Stock coolers have to be pushed into place until they lock. Frequently they do not fully lock and later come loose.

This is why we like to recommend 3rd party coolers even when you don't overclock.

If your cooler has loosened you will need to remove it, clean off the thermal paste, and re-apply new paste. Best to get a replacement cooler at the same time if you can.

Had the same issue. Mine was a defective psu. A voltmeter is also not going to be the correct tester for this as you would actually need an amp meter. I used an inductive amp meter and was able to determine my PSU was not up to the task. My system perfromed great running emulated games, word etc. Launch Batman Arkham City and poof it just shut down. Bought new PSU and Voila all is good
