UT2K4 LAN games

Hi all,

Bought a legit copy (new, in box) of UT2K4
"2 Disc DVD Edition" on eBay. It runs and
plays fine on both my home built P4 3+ghz/ATI 9700 desktop,
as well as my Dell Inspiron 8200 (P4 - 2ghz). I've
applied the Win Patch from 6/15/04 on both.

I cannot seem to play a LAN game between the 2 computers.
I also have UT2K3 and the old original UT installed on
both computers, and I can play those on my wi-fi LAN, no
problem. (I own both of those as well)

Also, occasionally, I get the message "the Master Server
has determined that your serial number is already in use
or invalid" when trying to play online. WTF??? I'm
using the s/n that's printed on the inside of my disk
case. I know that Deviance has a keygen program out there,
but what are the possibilities that someone else has my
key and is online? Anyone else have this problem?

I did go to the FAQ page, but didn't seen anything relevant
to either of these problems.

TIA

Darmok

Did you buy a copy for each computer on the LAN? Unplug your modem and
you'll be good to go.

Sorry .. my newsgroup server (Astraweb) doesn't have much retention,
apparently. I went back on another server and found the answer to my
question. Apparently, you have to have a copy of the game for every
computer, or no LAN games :-(

I tried your suggestion, btw, and disconnected my dsl modem, but was
still not able to play over my LAN (on which I can play both Quake II
and Quake III and other network games).

I'm a bit disappointed in Epic Games that they would make the game
unplayable over a LAN, unless you have separate copies. After all,
I tried out the game with their Demo version, and that one DID work
over the LAN. So, after luring me in, they pull the old "bait and
switch", and sell me a product that doesn't even do what the Demo
did. At the very best, that's lame. Worst case, its fraud, and
a class action lawsuit should be brought against them. Where the hell
is the ACLU when you need them ... ;-)

Grow up, of course there isn't that restriction in the demo, its free
and has no license keys.

You *can* play over a LAN. Only with a listen server, and by typing
the right command at the console of the "illegal" copy. I'm not
helping you there, though, but it's really simple.

Bullshit. The demo is free, and so you can install legal copies on
every computer you own. The full game isn't free, so you are still
allowed to install it on every computer you own, but you can only play
it on one at the same time.

It pretty well makes sense to me. Damok does not really have to buy extra
games but your friends who want to play on the lan must have their own game.
Typically lan games invlolve friends bringing their own computer with their
own software. If you play lan with regular friends get them to buy their
game. You paid for yours, get them to supply theirs.

No, and asking twice didn't get you the answer any faster.
