Audio output device

Hello, I bought a desktop PC in August 2010 and have had nothing but problems since I bought it. Support from the manufacturer has been non-existent. Latest thing is I upgraded from XP to Windows 7 and at around the same time my audio died completely.
My knowledge of PC's is minimal but I've looked through the box to try and recognise something which might be a sound card (there must be one...it worked before!).
My brother reckons the card will be embedded in the motherboard which is a ECS product and I should be able to download from ECS's website but I can find no options for soundcard drivers.
Any advice please?
I don't do jargon...don't have the knowledge!
Many thanks,

Steve

Oh yeah, should've said I get a message coming up saying "No audio output device is installed" when I hover the mouse over the loudspeaker symbol on the bottom RH corner of the screen!
