Hey, I'm wondering what's a better computer:

This one's got i5 460M 2.53 GHz - (probably 2.88 GHz under turbo boost but not sure), 512 MB dedicated 5470 ati:

OR

This one's got AMD Phenom II Quad-Core N930 2.0 GHz, but 1 GB 5650 dedicated and upgradeable to 2714MB:

Which one would be best for day to day tasks but some gaming as well? Thanks for the help.

The AMD setup will be alot better at gaming, for daily tasks its pretty much a draw, but the i3 will have a slight up-hand in terms of single threaded apps and power usage.

Power usage isn't really a concern for me. What about speed? Will their be a big difference?

For programs that use only 1 core, the Phenom will be quite a bit slower. A single core on the Phenom is about a ~1.6Ghz i5 core, but for anything that uses more than 2 cores (eg. heavy multitasking) the Phenom will start to pull ahead.

On the GPU side the comparison is much clear however, the HD5650 is about twice the performance of the 5470.

However why not get this, a quad-core i7 and better graphics (HD5730) for $1000: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1683...

Or these 2, i5+HD5650, $950:

Ok thanks.

I've heard i7 720QM tend to have heat related issues... otherwise that would be a better choice. Also that first link for the i5 is the i7 one, but the second i5 link looks like a good one, even though this one is 430m atleast it has HD 5650. I'll have to check it out more.

Edit:
For the i7 one, check out the reviews, it seems to be getting the same i7 720 problems - alot said heat and blue screen problems.

I think I'll go with the AMD Quad core, thanks for the help.

the both of them are good the amd advantage is it with ati card that will make it dragon platform it will be good for gaming but not for every use and its speed is not that good only 2.0 GHZ is not reccomended for today softwares and the i5 is good one but its gpu is not that good it will performe good with any application for turbo boost technology but the gpu is not good for HD gaming experince
and dont worry the i7 720 is good my brother have one toshiba qosmio equibed with the i7 720 and its perfect its really have heat issue with some brands like cyber power and i buy power and that brands are not good with laptops they build but popular companies like dell or toshiba or hp make it perfect and by the way while i mentioned HP have heat issues by self experince i used to have hp laptop its run very very hot
but if i were you i would check this two

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

but ofcourse i would go with qosmio

good luck and if you needed any help just PM me
