Only USB Sound Works

My USB headset and speakers work. However, I have a nice set of Bose speakers I want to use, but when plugged in they emit a screeching sound. I thought it was just the speakers, but any type of earbuds, or other speakers have the same problem.

Hmmm...does the speaker test from the Windows control panel work properly?

Also, some speakers can emit interfearence (such as a very loud screech) if placed near some other electronic component (say, a wireless mouse). That could also be the problem.
