Can I get higher than 3.8 ghz on Phenom II 965

Hey, I have a Phenom II 965 at 3.8 ghz with the coolermaster hyper 212 cooler. The highest temp it's hit in prime 95 was 43c... I heard that 3.8 is usually the max for a Phenom, even if it's at low temps... is this true? I made a bet with my friend that I could get up to 4.0.

  1. There might be a 'slight' problem -- the 790XT-G45 does not **officially** support the C2 140w PhII 965.

Only the 125w C3 965 (which is odd because the VRM on the MSI mobo is really tough for the most part).

Ignore this if you have a C3 --- take warning if you have a C2.

I've seen folks take the clock on that motherboard to 280MHz with a 95w CPU so 4GHz (with a little tweaking) is easily in your range. Pointing a fan at your FETs (or snagging a cooler) should ease your mind considerably.
  2. Just depends. I don't exactly trust Kingwin PSUs for a gaming build. Granted their Lasers are their better PSUs, but still. Anyway, if you haven't already you could lower your HT link and NB speeds to 1GHz for better stability in overclocking. They may get you to 4GHz.
  3. wait... what's so wrong with my psu? it had decent ratings...

  5. Kingwins are nice, the Lazers are pretty nicely rated and can be put on par with Antecs.

4Ghz on a 212+ is totally possible, though you will need some extra tweaking especially on the RAM and voltage side.

I got mine to go 4.0 the first hour after slapping it in just to do some benchmarks. So yeah, you can go higher than 3.8 it just might not be very stable. 3.9 to 3.95 seems to be very stable for me though.
