The system has an ASUS m4a785td-v evo board.

It has two PCIe 2.0 x16 slots, one PCIe x2 slot, and SATA II. A SATA II SSD looks only about twice as fast as a disk, so I'm interested in trying a PCIe 2.0 SSD.

Will a PCIe 2.0 x4 SSD work in a PCIe 2.0 x16 slot? I understand that generally smaller PCIe 2.0 cards work in larger slots, but I keep reading about how SSDs are a little finicky regarding their slot.

Solution
Should be no problem, your x4 card will only work by x4. Usually it should also work the different way, if you were crazy enough to saw your card at the right position ;)
