ATI is planning on releasing an entirely new GPU family and micro-architecture, the "Southern and Northern Island" graphics cards. Which will bear the Radeon HD 6xxx series moniker. The Southern Island will be the 32nm version, while the Northern Island will be the 22nm die shrink of both the same architecture.

Is there any word yet on when these cards are going to be released? Will it be close to the end of 2010 or some time in 2011? About how much faster will these cards be than the current HD 5xxx series?

I think you have it a bit wrong, their releasing a refresh of the 5xxx series late this year which will still be based on the 40NM proces, I think thats called Northern island, and Southern island will be the 6xxx series based on the 28NM process.

(I might have gotten SI and NI mixed up there, not sure :p )
