Homer: There’s 3 ways to do things, the right way, the wrong way, and the max power way.
Bart: isn’t that the wrong way.
Homer: yea but faster.
hang on there a sec - I re-read this after I got your e-mail. For some reason I was reading 386. My bad. A 286 is probably worthless, except as a paperweight. You'll need minimum 386. Sorry about that.
Coyote Linux is a freeware firewall that runs off a bootable floppy. I think it recommends a better proc but it might still work on a 286.
The only snag I can see you running into is not having the correct network card drivers. It might be harder to find a firewall distro that will support those than it will be to find one that supports a 286
Even if you got it to work it would be very slow. Chances are it would not be fast enough to be a very practical solution. Especially since network firewalls are dirt cheap now. Most routers designed for broadband internet sharing have fairly decent firewalls in them and they can be had for song. I would say don't waste your time with it unless you just want to see if it can be done, nothing wrong with that either. If you do proceed let us know how it turns out!
