I screwed up and already bought 2 sets of dual channel 2x4gb memory... I'm looking to get ASUS Rampage III Formula mobo which is obviously x58 triple channel... ok to just toss the 4th blade and use 3x4gb in a triple channel setup, or should I/can I just use the 4x4gb setup anyway?

Solution

Yes, you should be able to combine the kits together to either run 3x4GB or 4x4GB, whichever way you decide to go.

You can use a 4x4 GB setup if you want. Chances are, whatever you're doing doesn't need the memory bandwidth, so it won't hurt any. Then again, you probably won't be using all the RAM either, so it wouldn't hurt to go for a 3x4 GB setup either. Your choice, but if you want/need the RAM, take the former option, as the extra bandwidth won't do all that much, no matter what you're doing.
