HP motherboards are made by ASUS?

Some are. All the ones I've looked at have been. I don't know if all are.

You can find out about a particular model by going to the HP website support area and looking at motherboard specification for a particular brand.

They're still crap. Bios is locked. Bios updates are rare and CPU support is limited in comparison to their true Asus brethren.

Lots of companies make boards for HP.

Foxconn, MSI are a couple I know of.
