New gaming pc

Hi Guys,

Okay now i have a older intel pentium 4. Also bought a laptop sager 9261 for gaming almost three years or 4 years ago. Now i want to update. But i don't have the luxury to spend 2500.00 like three years or 4 years ago. I want to build a gaming pc for less than a $1000.00 dollars. I have been out of loop on how much it will cost. Also what recommendation do you guys give on parts. i am buying everything from tower to memory to dvd drive. Monitor i have one already. Also i will need speakers. Please Advice on what should i buy. The games i like to play are BF2 bad company, Crysis, COD 4, Just Cause and more. Just to give you of what do i need to run those game and future games.

Could probably switch out the 5870 for two SLId 460's?

seems like the obvious choice. a very solid build bat, but right now i would say 460 SLI build is almost certainly the way to go.

perhaps not the best way to do it though, since your own preference can get in the way of the best deal for the poster.

for the same price as a single 5870, you can get two 460's that offer performance almost surpassing a 5970.

OP, i would go for n SLI setup if you are comfortable going dual GPU. its the best price/performance on the market right now.

It's actually a bit more expensive as you need a board that can XFire/SLI. There is also the risk of SLI not always scaling well. But then, I am like Batuchka and always believe on a new build 1 strong card better than two.

Assuming you did get a motherboard that can XFire/SLI, the 5870 costs you $380, the cheapest GTXs will cost you $400 for two. Personally if I were GTX460ing it would be the 1gb versions and that will set you back $460

The 5870 can pretty much handle everything on 1920 x 1080 atm, 2 x 460 may be better but they don't need to be. Also you are now locked in with 2 weaker GPUS so in future you have to replace both, whereas with the 5870 you can just add one in the future.

But the two 460's are TWICE as powerful. meaning they will last twice as long. add another 5870 down the road and it will then be obsolete at the same time as the 460's need to be replaced. so it doesn't cast any more in the long run either.

I almost always recommend a single GPU system, but the 460 is a glaring exception to the usual rule. excellent performance, amazing scaling and a bargain price. there is no reason not to get it if you can afford the appropriate mobo and PSU.

Okay, Were will be a good place to get this. Actually a friend is selling his monitor to me a 23 inch Widescreen Samsung monitor for $150. Do you think that's a lot. Also the 460 is a Radeon or Nvidia. I am kind of out of loop on the video card also. What is the difference with the intel and Nvidia. This setup will it last for a long time or it will be obsolete in a couple of years. Will it able to handle games that will come out later on.

Cheapest Samsung 23 inch I see on Newegg is $210. So I would say $150 is not a bad price depending on how long he has had it.

the 460 is Nvidia.

Radeon have been pretty much the cards to recommend for most of a year now thanks to a great 5xxx series, when Nvidia came to the party with their 4xx series they were late and the cards are a bad design - very hot and power hungry and noisy and heavily overpriced. This seems to have had a swift turn around since the release of the GTX 460 from Nvidia, it is a fantastic budget card and as stated above, two of them really is amazing

note: 2 5870's beat 2 gtx 460's in alot of benches.

but the 460 SLI option would not need replacing for 24 months, since its twice as powerful. so in 24 months time you have to replace both cards, but can get something more powerful for a lower cost. so while the 'upgrade path' is supposedly worse, the real world/price performance upgrade options are no worse (if not better) with a 460 SLI setup.

no, have you even looked at the benchmarks?

the scaling of the 460 is far superior. so two 460's perform only a little less than a 587 crossfire setup. but considerably cheaper.
