Max number of PCI 1x slots

Hello,
What is the max number of PCI 1x slots on a motherboard. So far I have only found motherboards with 2 slots but would like more (4?) does anyone know if that is even possible ?

Are you asking about PCI slots or PCIe x1 slots?

If you're asking about regular PCI slots, it's time to start replacing your PCI cards with PCIe cards or just use the capabilities built into mainboards nowadays. I've seen boards with three PCI slots, but no more than that. Fairly soon though, there won't be any PCI slots on mainboards -- PCIe will be taking over.

The most I've seen on a board was two I think. Why would you need more than that?

Most basic functions are built into the mainboards nowadays anyway. Sound, eSATA, FireWire, Bluetooth, USB2/3, can all be found built-in.

If you really need to, you can use x16 slots for x1 cards, but that's a waste and can result in lost graphics performance.

I was looking for more than two for the SATA extender cards that come with most multidisk esata enclosures.
