The motherboard in an older machine here just failed and for now I'm only planning to replace the board instead of a full upgrade of everything. Most of the replacement boards that I am finding do not have onboard video like the one that failed did, and one of the boards I'm looking at is great in certain areas but only has two PCI slots and no PCI Express/AGP (it's a server board).
It's been a while since I've had a PCI video card, so my main question is will the PCI bus be adequate for a video card that drives a 1680x1050 display (and possibly a second monitor at 1280x1024) as well as a sound card? How bad will the video and sound cards fight each other for resources? In another machine here with a sound card and SCSI card on the same PCI bus there is crackling in the audio with disk activity, so I'm trying to figure out how much of a problem that might be with this potential setup of video and sound card both being PCI.
This machine is mainly for surfing, email, and some video watching (no gaming or very intensive video-related tasks).
