This came up in another thread in the Systems forum-

Could the current 5970 hardware potentially support 3d gaming in the future with new drivers/etc, or is the hardware not capable of playing games in 3d?

Thanks!

It supports it in hardware, it simply needs the support of Devs, through the Open3D platform. nV wants proprietary (like PhysX) , ATi, S3 and intel want open; so it's up to the devs now to decide their path.

Still not very compelling now (like so many other check-boxes) but that will change as more and more 3D supported software titles (games and movies) and hardware solutions start to come forward.

3D support will likely take off more in movies than computing/games, especially after the PS3 3DBD update, but it will drag everything else with it over time where it's just another option to enable.
