What GPU setup is actually capable of completely maxing out Crysis with a playble framerate?

All "very high" detail, 2560x1600 resolution, with 8x AA on DX10?

3-4 way SLI GTX 480 can also do it.

I would imagine that highly overclocking both HD 5970's and water cooling them will increase the FPS by about 12-15 frames.

Trying to power 3 GTX 480's is difficult enough, even with a 1500W PSU, powering Four of them would load up the PSU to 100%. Not to mention putting huge pressure on your circuit breaker.

Two HD 5970's in crossfire uses much less energy than Three or Four Fermi's in SLI. Maybe 650-700W combined. Four Fermi's use over 1KW.

You can't do Quad-SLI.
Anyways if you knew the answer then why bother posting? I also don't get maxi-heads that want the max, I doubt you'll be able to even see 2xAA at 2560x1600, I finally don't know why people want such huge monitors, even ASUS's 25.5 inch 1920x1200 is pretty big, and if you're going to sit far away you might as well as get a big TV.

If the two 5970s are overclocked to 5870 levels (and it's the 4GB version with 2GB per GPU for each 5970), then it can max out Crysis at VH and 2560x1600 with AA turned up.

If it's the 2GB version (1GB each) and non-overclocked, then you'll need to play with lowered AA.

3x 5870s (2GB version) or 3x GTX480s can also max out Crysis at VH and 2560x1600 with AA turned up.

Of course, the true "max" are Ultra High graphics mods, which make it look better than very high:

There has been a driver update to enable quad SLI.

Also big monitors are good if they have good pixel density. A 30" 2560x1600 monitor would have standard pixel density while a 25.5" or 28" at 1920x1200 would appear less sharp so you need to sit further.
