I have a question, we have new second hand server system with 2xquad core and 16 gb ram, that I want to set up for quite big CFD and NVH simulations. Now I want to think about the fastest way how to set up the hard drives and programs. The system is only used for the computations, all computed data will be copied to another network hd, so data redundancy is not an issue.
There are 2 sata hardisks 500GB, and 1 ssd 64 Gb.
We would like operating systems I would like to have and windows and linux as a dual boot.
And I have to install the programs,
(The computations involves inverting large matrixes sparce and non sparse. That in most cases fit in to the RAM, but quite a number of cases will not fit in to the ram. (so here I thought that using the SSD to put the swapfile will be more fast)
The crash simulations involve a lot of writing to the HDs to write the history data, but they are not so ram demanding.(so here I thought using the SSD as the work directory would be more fast)
I am not very experienced, and new to linux and setting up systems, Raid and SSD, so any suggestions are appreciated. My main question is what is the best way to install and put the programs and data for my application?
The goal is to run automated vehicle optimizations, that require some crash runs, and some NVH runs.
So my naïve fantasy dream scenario would be: for example I want to send a job with some scripts such that , the computer will first do 2 crash simulations with the SSD as the workdirectory logging the crash history, some data will be extracted from the history and then the data can be deleted, then I want a script that sets the swap dir to the SSD, run the NVH simulations, extract the required data, and then a new iteration of the same procedure should begin for the next iteration, saving the little amount of extracted data of every iteration on one of the sata disks.
Is it so easy to change the location of the swap file from one place to the other every time?
If no and I have to choose a permanent set up which setup would you recommend me? Here I put Some ideas of my own but if you have better suggestions I would be thankfull.
1) HD1=OPsys, HD2prog+workdir., HD3(SSD)swapfile
2) HD1=OPSYS+swap HD2progs HD3(SSD)workdir
3) HD1=OPSYS, HD2progs HD3(SSD)workdir and swap? (size is critical I think!)
4) (RAID 0) HD1&2 for OPSYS, progs and workdir HD3(SSD)swap
5) (RAID 0) HD1&2 for OPSYS, progs HD3(SSD)swap+workdir? (size is critical I think!)
