PC Freezing Aargh!

Hello,
built my pc about 6 months ago and now it randomly starts freezing with no warning (ie no slowdown, wierd knocks or groans). When it freezes it keeps the last screen on, mouse doesnt work, sometimes a sound like a whine or many clicks together happens through the speakers and the only way to get it off is to hold in the power button.

My spec is:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q300 2.5 GHz
4 GB Ram
Gforce 9800 GT Graphics Card
Windows Vista Ultimate 64 Bit

First thing I would do is make sure that all cards are seated in their slots properly. Then I would check the PSU. After that I would check the HDD and make sure that is not failing at a BIOS level. I had a Gen One Raptor develop an intermittent BIOS issue and it drove me insane trying to track down the fault.
