4 ram slot dual channel config question

Suppose I have 4 ram slots. Do I have to have 4 matched sticks to get full dual channel benefits? Or can I have, say, 2x4GB and 2x2GB and still get full dual channel benefits from both pairs?

You can use two different matched sets. I have 12GB of G.Skill Ripjaws X RAM in my Sandy Bridge system -- one 2x4GB kit and one 2x2GB kit. I get the full dual-channel benefits from it. As long as both channels have the same amount of RAM, it works perfectly.

  3. But putting too many sticks puts more stress on the CPU right?
