Noob doing complete upgrade, needs help!

Hey, Im doing pretty much a complete upgrade on my pc and i wondering where i should look to buy parts and if i should know anything before i begin upgrading, i live in vancouver so any locals could help tell me of stores that would be great. Also i heard not to buy from Futureshop or bestbuy because they over price there stuff, is that true?
