I have a Compaq Presario CQ62-231 that had the hard drive fail. It had a 320GB Toshiba 3265gsx hard drive. Any suggestions for replacing this? What is the most cost effective replacement? As I understand it, any 2.5 inch SATA will work. Is that true?

Yes, any 2.5in SSD will work (so long as it is 2TB or under).

I'm not sure how much you want to spend, but this 750GB WD Blue is a very good value.
