I have just ordered ATH M50 headphones and was wondering if we would need a soundcard to get the best sound out of it.

Most computers made within the last 3-4 years deliver the same sound quality as a sound card. From my experience, they are exactly the same.

An ordinary sound card definitely cannot drive all types of headphones and at adequate volume levels especially larger ones with lower impedance.
You can get a soundcard like an ASUS Xonar Essence ST/STX, which is considered of very high quality and is designed with headphones and stereo output in mind, or a dedicated headphone amp like Pro-Ject Head Box, or of course both :D

^^^^ What he said^^^^^^

While sound quality is very close with integrated these days when it comes to actual output power theres no comparison.

Pointless spending good money on high quality headgear if you cant use them to there potential.

Also factor in that a good quality sound card can follow you from build to build for years

If you're really worried about the sound quality, then try listening to things for a while with on board sound (let's say a week or so unless you are immediately unsatisfied) and then if you want to you can get a dedicated sound card. Even if it turns out the sound doesn't help that much it's happy to move into different computers as you get new ones :)

Atm, the Asus Zonar STX (and the PCI version if there is one) is considered the best card for music, as long as you have some good speakers/headphones. For gaming, the Auzentech Forte is one of the best and is also good at music (but the STX is better at music)
