Gigabyte Radeon HD 4550 vs 8600GT

Hello,
I had a nVidia 8600gt for three years, but now it died and i have to buy a new (cheap) video card.
Is a radeon HD 4550 a right choice for me and is it any better that my previous one? Thanks in advance

  1. No. Its a couple of steps down from what you had. A 4650 would be slightly better that your old 8600GT. But only slightly.
Look here to find a graphic card herarchy chart

  2. the 4650 DDR3, avoid the DDR2 version, but the those are hard to find

the ATI 4670 is reasonably priced $65, a good move up from the 8600GT, and will work on the same PSU.
  3. The HD4550 is a good card. The 9600GT is faster then the HD4550. The 9600GT=HD4830

If you want the same performance as the 9600GT you need to get a ATI HD5670 or the nVidia GT 240

If I was you I would go for the HD5450 or the HD5550 over the HD 45550.

They are about the same price as the HD4550 and perform better and support DX11
  4. Nice, thank you both!
hehe i guess i shouldn't be looking only at numbers :P
From the page i intended to buy, there is the 4670 for 90 euros wich is much much more than 65 dollars. is it worth spending more?

the Nvidia 9600GT actually offers ATI 3870 performance, the ATI 4830 offers Nvidia 9800GT performance

markets change from country to country and we (luckily) get the cheapest prices in the USA

is it worth it, depends on what you fall back is. it is worth over a card like the ATI 4650 DDR2 or Nvidia 8600GT...yes

if you can find a cheap ATI 5570, then its not...
  7. What about the HD 5450(it is for 70 € - less than the 4670) now that the 4550 is out of the question?
  8. the 4550 is a re-badged 4350 with 1GB of RAM, its a marketing gimmick card.

the 5450 is a step down from the 8600GT

  9. I see...
Forgive me, but i find this all confusing :) i figured after 3 years everything will be better than my old 8600gt.
Well after all this I guess the 4670 is the best option for me right now?
  10. its a good option

what web site are you buying off, can you link it?
  11. this is the best card they have under 70, its a solid step up from the 8600GT but not as good as the 4670.

    Nvidia GT220

they also have one under 60 but it uses the slower DDR2 RAM

  12. Thanks to everyone. I've already bought the 4670 (i squeezed an extra 20 euros for the budget)

Well, thanks again you were really helpfull. :)
  13. enjoy
