Graphics Card Thermal Pads

I took apart my BFG Tech NVidia GeForce 9800 GT 512MB and saw thermal pads on the RAM chips. I took the thermal pads off and saw that there was an oily like substabce on them and the chips. I was wondering what that was? I accidently removed the oily substance. Can I still put them on without the substance or can I put Arctic Silver 5 on the thermal pad sides?

I'm sure the oily stuff was just thermal paste. You should be fine with the AC5.
