I am a chemist and wanted to do some computational chemistry at home. I went a little overboard on the RAM I feel but am not worried about that. As well, I've considered doing some video editing and some gaming now that I'll have a rig capable.

get 4gb gskil cl7 1600mhz ddr3 ram
1tb samsung spinpoint f3
and u can get an ati 5970
and what psu are u getting?? i recomend xfx 750w

How do you like your rig? What type of programs do you run and how does it handle them?

Everything I put is pretty much set in stone for the mean time, but just out of curiosity.

Is the spinpoint f3 3GB/s or 6GB/s?

Looking at benchmarks I found that the Kingston HyperX was as good as or out performed other RAM. Not sure if the gskil was included in those benchmarks, though.

the spinpoint is the fastest 7200rpm hhd and the g.skill is very good cause it has good price and low latency... iv heard bad things abaout hyperx

I'll let you know if I have any probs with the RAM.

However, the transfer rate of the spinpoint is only 3gb/s, and I want to take advantage of the new 6gb/s capability.

u dont use it... the 6gb/s is good only for ssd in hdd u will never EVER(lol) use i

that pc u linked is overkill

the x4 955 can be clocked to the 965 by upping the multiplier by 1
the hd 5970 is overkill

but if u dont overlock.... like me

and the 5970 is nedded to play full hd max settings and aa x4 on crysis for example


and i reffer to the 125w version

the 5870 can handle 1080p everything maxed out on any game

and the 5970 is future proofand its like 2 5870 so u have that and u are abieable to crossfire


PD: very important lol i forgot... i want to do eyefinity in the future

mm question crossfire bottleneck that cpu?

I just recently learned about eyefinity. Once I can talk myself into buying three monitors, I'll try it out. Seems like it would be a fantastic gaming experience. I play MW2 on PS3, I may have to get it on PC.

1 5970 preforms worse than 2 5870's and equals 2 5850's

and quad cf scaling sucks it will only make a 1-10 fps improvement in games
so a better choice is either 1 5970 or 2 gtx 460's

1 5970 is a lit worse than 2 5870 and a lit better than 2 5850

with this u can add 2 more monitors to run 2d sorround (another word for eyefinity but it's nvidia's)
