Just wondering. In Instant Action, how high in bot skill
can you get and still beat the bots most of the time?
I can win all the time with the bots on the "Skilled" level but when I
put the bots on the next level up, I get owned.

I've played on Onsault servers with and against MeltDown, and yes, he is
tough.

All I know about the UT bots I've encountered are pretty simple in their
modes. They either run or shoot, but never seem to do both.

A buddy of mine has a private server and his bots for some reason like
telefragging people, including each other. I am not totally sure, but
they seem more aggressive with the CTF maps.

Okay .. I'll admit that I'm not very good. Yes, I can win all the DM
matches with bots set to 'average', but when we switch to DD or CTF,
the bots seem to be tougher at even the 'average' setting. Most of
the time, I'm NOT at the top of the 'most frags' list posted after a
match. I've never even tried Onslaught yet, or any of the other
advanced modes. What I need is a personal training coach to critique
my performance after each match .. "You should have done such-and-such
when you were attacked by Avarice" .. or "in order to bring down a
dancing/flying opponent, you need to do this". Is there such a thing
as "Unreal Tournament for Dummies" at the local computer store? I
don't know how one can pick up advanced skills, when they haven't a
clue as what to do. I've been through the tutorials, but they don't
cover advanced skills. I think the most help I've had over the years
is attending a LAN Party, and watching players more skilled than
myself (which is about everyone). By watching what they do, and how
they do it, I have been able to become moderately better .. but
progress is slow. Granted, I don't practice 3 hours a day .. probably
necessary to become one of the "elite".

Oh well, UT is still a game that you can enjoy, no matter what your
skill level, even if it is a bit on the lower scale. Still wish I
could be better though ...

The best thing to do would be to go on some of the pub servers and just spectate
some of the better players. Learn how they move, what weapons they choose for
different fights, etc.

You can also ask if someone would be willing to spectate you for awhile and
offer some pointers. Might be hard to find someone who will, but eventually
you'll find someone who doesn't mind doing it.

I think they do better in CTF because the maps give them clues what they're
supposed to do and where they're supposed to go. For the most part, they're
pretty much aimless in fragfests, and don't seem to know when it's a good
idea to run away. The extra doses of speed and quickness in the higher
skill levels helps a lot, but you end up with the 'takes 3 rockets in the
face and is still walking' effect, which I find incredibly annoying.

MISTAKE! MISTAKE! Play onslaught now. Best online game ever.

The problem is, when a regular player does the dancing and kangaroo boy
trick, you can usually nail them with a lucky shot (if the server isn't too
laggy anyway). The same lucky shot on a toughened bot will do damage, but
they'll keep on bouncing because they have inflated health.

Now you're talking. The only way to learn to play is to play against humans.
Forget the bots - they're just seat warmers for the real game. *

I find my skill level seems to vary, some days i'm not too bad then other
days i seem to have clown shoes on a big red nose and a shoot me sign on my
head :). Whether its down to bio rythms or just plain alcohol i dont know.
I just wish i knew when my bad day was comming so i could do something else
instead.

If you play IG, there is only 1 bot that will own you in insane mode,
and it's Loki. The rest are beatable, but Loki's 100% accurate weapon
cannot be beat, unless you have spawn spots out of view. LOL, I
recently had Loki on the opposing team in a "local" CTF game with no
cover for the spawn spots, needless to say, he went godlike on me,
spawn killing me b4 I could get a shot off in most instances.

Same here. Skilled is a little too easy, but Adept is much, much too
hard. From what I've been able to make out from other sources, Skilled
is the level at which the bots have no advantages or disadvantages.

It seems like there's a definite plateau among human players: some find
bots challenging, and they usually find them challenging at about this
level. Others seem to find Godlike bots to be pathetic. It's not just a
matter of practice: I've been playing FPS games since Escape From Castle
Wolfenstein 3D. I suspect it's just plain better reflexes.

One thing that does make a difference: I used to play UT99 on a 266 MHz
PC, and I'd get about 15-20 FPS. When I upgraded to 1.3 GHz, I'd get the
max possible framerate, and I think my performance as a player improved
a little. I find UT2K4 enjoyable and playable at the 25-30 FPS I get
now, but I suspect I'd be getting more headshots with a better framerate.

I haven't been playing online, since I'm on dialup.
