Hi,

What do you guys think about my 1st build? Here are the specs:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X2 555 BE 3.2ghz w/ Stock Cooler

MOBO: Asus M4A785TD-V EVO

GPU: XFX Radeon HD 5770 1gb

PSU: Corsair TX650W

RAM: G. Skill 4gb (2gb x2) F3-10666CL8D-4GBRM

CASE: Cooler Master HAF 922

HDD: Maxtor 6L00R0 200gb PATA (Got from external hdd)

I was also wondering if this was your build, what would you upgrade and why? I am of course thinking about upgrading the hard drive to a more better and faster one as well as add a cd/dvd burner. My budget for the upgrades is around $200-250 since any of you might suggest more than one component to upgrade besides the hdd and cd/dvd burner that I've already mentioned.

Thanks!

Nice job with cable management.
With that budget an aftermarket CPU cooler and a DVD comes to mind.
The budget will handle a 2nd HD 5770 for Crossfire, and while it's not ideal using an x4 slot it will give your gaming performance a boost.

Well if you want to overclock, you might want to look into some aftermarket CPU heatsinks. However, for a HDD upgrade, 1 terabyte hard drives now go for around $80 bucks for a 7200 rpm one. As for a DVD burner, there are plenty of OEM ones, but look into the ASUS DRW-B1ST. The two upgrades come to around ~$110-$120 with tax. For a good heatsink, there is the CM Hyper 212+ ($50), the Cogage True Spirit ($30), and the Xigmatek Dark Knight ($45). If you want, since the Radeon 5770s are dropping in price (Radeon 6000 series coming this October) and you could wait for those to drop to around $100.

Would you guys suggest a cpu upgrade (Like core wise, maybe a quad core?)? I don't mean right now, but maybe in the next 5-6 months.

ditch that old HD. maybe relegate it to storage-only duties. thats a biggie.

see if your mobo supports unlocking cpu cores, but regardless upgrade cpu cooler and OC that x2 555.

the rest of your system is pretty good. i've been wanting the haf922/932 so bad. my antec P180 is annoying haha

anyway, if you find your FPS in games lacking, xfire another 5770 in there

if photo/video editing is more your style, and you cant unlock cores on your x2 555, then maybe a six-core 1055t or 1090t would be more your thing in a few months..

What resolution is your monitor on? If it is less than 1920 x 1080 there is no need to improve the GPU or XFire them.

I would say 500gb is probably plenty for a gaming rig, so $55 gets you the Samsung Spinpoint F3. A DVD drive will cost about $20.

That leaves you with $125 - $175 left. I would buy a Phenom II 955. Alternatively, try unlocking the cores on your 555, and instead of a new processor use the money to buy a motherboard that can XFire at least x8/x8, so that in future you can XFire the 5770.
If you are able to unlock at least one core on your processor and overclock it, for gaming you wont really need a new procesor

Yea the HAF 922 was a really good buy knowing that it is a future proof case :)  I couldn't get the 2 disabled cores to unlock. The MOBO I have has an updated bios where when the PC boots up, there is an option to press "4" and the MOBO would automatically unlock the 2 disabled cores, but it didn't work since I think they're defective. When I unlocked the 2 disabled cores, windows wouldn't boot, it got froze on starting windows logo :( . I am definitely going to upgrade the HD.

Well, before I bought the XFX 5770, I was asking around to see what card would be best suited for playing games at resolution of 1280x1024 although I sometimes use my 32inch HDTV to play movie files from the PC or play games as well. I already tried playing Assassins Creed and it was fluid on the HDTV. I got a couple of responses suggesting the 5770. So I got it for a $100 on craigslist :)  I made sure though that I would get the lifetime warranty too which was transferable when I got it and it was a really good deal. I was thinking 1tb since I make images of the games I have and I do have several games. I create the iso image files of the games since it boots faster when booting from HD. So would you recommend a 1tb Samsung Spinpoint F3 over the 1tb WD Caviar Black for a boot drive?

Since I mentioned that I couldn't unlock the 2 disabled cores on my x2 555, would you guys recommend x2 955 or x2 965? And what do you guys think about this dvd drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

In that case I certainly would not worry about another card or a mobo to XFire them - 5770 is more than powerful enough to deal with 1280 x 1024

Personally I would grab the Samsung Spinpoint 1tb for $74.99.

Phenom x4 955 would be my suggestion, it is essentially the same chip as the 965 and one tweak in Bios will make it a 965 but at the cost of a 955.

DVD Drive looks fine, I always just look for one around the $20 mark
