Is there any difference in performance between 8GB (4x2GB) of DDR3 and 8GB (2x4Gb) of DDR3? Thanks in advance.

Maybe. Some motherboards seem to like 2 sticks better than 4 sticks.

Difference in actual performance? No. I recommend the 2x4GB config simply because it offers more expandability in the future. Also, the less slots you have populated, the less power your system will use.
