Hey all,

My Seagate HD is no longer working and making these sounds on startup - anyone recognize what is going on? It's not really a clicking but spins a few times and eventually quits. It sometimes shows up a a 4GB drive with no partitions...

Here is a video of the noise

Solution
Thats a bad drive, toss it.
That loud grinding/whirring noise is the bearings going bad in the motor to start off, and the clicking sounds like it has lost the ability to read from the heads so it shuts down.

If those sounds are from the hard drive itself then its undoubtedly the hard drive seems like the platter that's spinning at those speeds. I would say bad sectors and its proably got corrupt files now on it, how long have you owned the hard drive for? Typically hard drives last anywhere from 2-7 years. There are many factors that contribute to the life of the hard drive.

Also, you may be able to get it warrantied still.
Look up your drive on seagate's website. Even if it's not under warranty, sometimes they will offer you a discount if you trade it. WD does that kind of stuff as well.

thanks - we actually have quite a few of these - I was mostly hoping for a last chance to mount/copy from it :/ Your explanation of the bearings makes sense.

Thanks!
