Quick Review please

Hey people, I'm helping my brother put together his first custom PC build, and I need a quick double check please. His budget is right about $1000, so I don't think there's too much room to change things up, and I just bought him a HD 5850, so the GPU is covered. This setup has about $125 in instant savings and another $40 in rebates that I'm not counting on.. Anywho all this is right about at $1050 with shipping.

He's looking for a moderate gaming build, and we're gonna shoot for a modest OC, prolly 3.6-3.8 depending. He doesn't ever plan on using Crossfire, so I tried to pick the best budget mobo. Also leaning towards that Gskill ram because it's blue, he'd like to stick with the color since the case, mobo, gpu and etc are mostly going to be blue as well.. lol

More about quick review please
  1. 1.) Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB hard drive instead. Pretty much equal in price but much better overall.

2.) Just make sure to check for Newegg combos, which it sounds like you have from your post.
  2. Case wise, a HAF 922 or Antec 300 illusion or CM 690 are all cheaper and would be fine. In general, the HAF 922 is a better buy over the antec 900, even if cost is the same.

Hey Tecmo, do you recommend the Samsung Sinpoint F3 over the WD Caviar Black for a boot drive? Putting the price aside which one do you think has better overall performance.
  4. tecmo34, thanks for the tip on the Samsung F3, I'm gonna substitute that hard drive in, that looks like a pretty good deal..

banthracis, I actually own the HAF 922 and the CM 690, so I'm very familiar with those 2 cases, and they are both very awesome cases. I'm using the HAF 922 with my recent i7 build, and I'm really impressed with how awesome it is, I added an additional 120mm to front and a 200mm to the side just for kicks.

Anywho, he's going for blue colors and likes the window on the Antec 900 case. The Antec case actually comes with a $20 rebate, so that would knock it back to about $80 if that goes through. In the end, he really liked the looks of Antec 900.. so I suppose that's what it all comes down to... thanks though :p

Yes... I would recommend the Samsung Spinpoint F3 as a boot drive over the WD Black. I give the overall edge to Samsung, as it is based off of two 500GB platters versus the four 250GB platters of the older WD Black
