Hi Group: I recently bought a Presario (used) over Ebay paid $200. It was
upgraded to Windows XP Home and the memory was also upgraded to 128MG.This
Laptop came with a CD/DVD drive. The question is: The DVD dosen't work, the
CD works fine but no DVD.After checking if there were special drivers on the
Compaq site I noticed that they don't recomend upgradeing to XP (it came
originally with WIN 98 SE) All the drivers for the DVD on the site were
asking which Operating system I had Win ME or WIN 98. Nothing about XP.Is
there anyway I came get the DVD working using XP??? HELP !!

If the drive reads CDs fine then XP is doing its job in recognising and
operating the drive.
There is much more required of the drive itself to read a DVD than a CD.
As I understand it a red laser is used for DVD and a blue laser for CD.
So there is one area of difference in the reading process, as well as th
the finer tolerances of a DVD.
If you are interested in the technical stuff this may be a good read:
http://forums.psxforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=52984 I think you have a faulty drive. I came across a drive that stopped
reading DVDs first, then began to only intermittently read CDs.
Hopefully you drive wont deteriorate further but it doesn't look good.

Power DVD software works excellent on older Compaqs. If you did a
clean install w/XP you need dvd software and codecs. It will NOT read
DVD's without either.
