I would like to run test prints on paper less than 8.5 x 11, which appears
to be the smallest size that the Epson 4000 will accept (Why waste a whole
sheet, when half a sheet or smaller will give the information I need)

Is there a way to fool the printer into printing onto half a sheet, either
by feeding a cut sheet or simply flipping over the sheet to print on the
other half?

Forgive an ignorant post - I know it's a big printer, but little else
about it! Won't stop me from responding tho'... (O;

Can you not set up a Custom print size?? - check the manual/printer
driver settings to do this. It will soon tell you if the size you
enter is not acceptable - there's almost certainly a very good reason
if it really *isn't* able to accept smaller sizes..

If it's a well-behaved printer, you should be able to feed anything
into it, as long as it is long and wide enough to be 'grabbed'. The
printer will simply stop when it hits the end (lengthways) of the sheet
- and naturally it is up to you to ensure your image doesn't go off the
edges. When/if the printer stops as it hits the end of the sheet, just
cancel the print job/switch the printer off...

Yes, fool everyone by placing a sheet of paper in, printing on the top
half, and later, printing on the bottom half, either by turning it
upside down, or in printer set up. Heck, in some applications, PS for
one, you can arrange the print to be placed anywhere on the page. I
sometimes do this for comparative purposes anyway.

I have the 4000 and love it.

In photohop:
You can easily place small prints on any portion of the paper, feeding it
through multiple times and specifying a different part of the same paper
each time. I do this all the time when I'm putting together compilations of
small images.

You do this from within the "print with preview" series of commands. Simply
size your image so that it is small (Image>image Size), then after you tweak
whatever you like, choose File>Print with Preview. From here, you simply
un-check the box that says "center image", then drag the image to whatever
portion of the paper you wish.

If you're worried about exactly where to place subsequent images (without
overlapping previously printed ones), use the margin measurements to
determine exactly where the new print will be placed. You can then mark
each print on the page with a pen to note the settings you've tried for each
print, and just feed it back in--face down, top-in into the cut sheet tray.

I tried this and it worked well, but not exactly the way you described. What
version of PS are you using?

(I currently have 6.0, and will be upgrading to CS soon)

Thanks.

Hmmm... For some reason I thought you said you had CS.

That's what I'm using...
I'm pretty sure it's fairly similar in 6, but I definitely would encourage
you to upgrade.
The jump from 6 to 7 was good, but the jump from 6 to CS (8) is GREAT!

If you are in any way associated with education, you can purchase the full
version at fantastic savings. I bought the entire non-upgrade "Premium
Suite" of CS programs for $900 less than retail.

It won't take half a sheet but it's easy to set up a blank document say 8x10" @
300 ppi (or whatever ppi you want) and put your tests on layers taking up a
fraction of the sheet, then just turn on/off the layers and print multiple
times on the same sheet ... you can re-run the same sheet thru the printer and
so long as the print areas don't overlap you'll be fine.

Hmm, my little cheapo Epson C80 takes all sorts of sizes. The feeder
squeezes down to about 3 inches. I set up custom paper sizes in the
software. I feed checks into the fax machine to make copies & it usually
works. Sometimes I'll tape a reciept to a letter sized piece of paper to
make it feed easier.

Up to what, 8.5 x 11" or so? The 4000 also "takes all sorts of sizes",
starting at 8.5 x 11" and going up to 17x22" sheets or 17" x severl ft with
roll paper and the right driver software.

Oh yeah it's only up to letter size. I'd check if you can set custom
paper sizes before giving up though. It seems odd they wouldn't allow
that, I guess the rollers are just big if that's the case. Try scotch
taping 1/4 sheets onto a letter size page.

I heard that it is not exactly 17", but a little smaller. Is this true?

It will print borderless on 17" wide rolls.
