Intel/amd for basic use and tv tuning

I know very little about cpu's and have done some research that shows intel and AMD as the ones to really choose between. My computer use is very simple I search the web, listen to itunes, and do college homework ie word processing, powerpoint and so on. I am currently thinking about building my own computer and want some help choosing a CPU. The other thing is that I would like to include in my new system a TV tuner

Hmmm... with needs so low, you don't need to worry too much. AMD/Intel won't matter too much. But yes, AMD and Intel are the only real competition. Whats your budget? And computer building experience?
