Australia? Hmm not sure where to buy stuff over there.

In terms of US prices $750 build.

Phenom II x4 955 $160 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103808
GA 770 AM3 $80 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128431
G Skill Eco 4gb $105 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231321
OCZ Fatal1ty 550w $65 PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817341022
Spinpoint F3 500gb HD $55 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152181
GTX 460 $200 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130562

Now add a good budget case CM 690, Antec 300, CM Elite $40-$60 and
Cheap Optical drive $20

Total comes to $745 in US prices. May be different in your area.

there are specialized workstation cards. Hardware wise they're pretty similiar, but it's the application optimized drivers that you're really paying for with workstation cards.

On your budget though, decent ones are way out of your price range. CUDA on a F104 chip like the 460 is not bad, and to be honest, will be better than any workstation card at that price range.
