HP nc8000 noise

Greetings,

I've got a rather odd noise eminating from the right upper side of the
keyboard on my nc8000 where my hard drive is located, but only during
certain operations. For example, when I grab the title bar of an
active window and move it around my screen, I hear this noise. It's
not hard drive activity, more like an oscillation or "static" coming
from the area around the hard drive. The same noise is present when
holding down the left mouse button while scrolling down and reading a
large document.

Also, it's not coming through the speakers, and the noise isn't
present in the BIOS either. I'm thinking it's driver related. Does
anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

It's the graphics circuit/chip. Try reinstalling the video driver;
update if possible.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I installed both the HP driver and the most recent Catalyst drivers
from ATi's website, and the problem still persists. Do you have any
other tips? I've looked through the configuration of the drivers and
nothing seems to make a difference.

What happens if you decrease the color depth or decrease the
acceleration a notch? Also, try another mouse - does the sound do the
same if using the touchpad? If using a wireless mouse, try either
changing the channel or using a wired mouse to see if that has any
effect. Does the brightness setting have an effect? Remove any
peripherals one at a time to eliminate other devices.

You might also try removing the video driver in safe mode, and then
reinstalling it.

Is the noise coming from the screen itself, maybe where the inverter is
located between the hinges? Sometimes it is really hard to isolate the
source since sounds are reflected from the keyboard and screen.
