The GTS 250 has better driver support simply because nVidia considers it "newer". Both the 9800GTX+ and the GTS 250 use the same G92b chip with the same clocks so any performance disparity is simply driver optimization and fixes for the GTS 250. Of course, the GTS250 uses less power since the board design was simplified when yields improved. Both cards are only clocked slightly faster than the 9800GTX. As for comparisons to the 9800GT you can find those on the Graphics Charts on this site easy enough.

But,,,,, there is a lot of performance potential difference in a 550mhz 9800/112 SP and stock clocked gts 250 or 9800gtx+/128SP at 738.
Those are the things to look for, as well as prices. Those clocks might not be reachable on the lesser models, whether its Vcore, cooler, whatever.
Pretty similar to the ATI 5750/5770, sort of the same, but different.

I'd forget about the 9800GTX or GTS250 and go with 5770 or 5750 for DX11 support and better future proofing. Plus if you turn into a hardcore gamer later you'll have the option of Eyefinity (three monitors for panoramic gaming experience) and the 9800GTX/GTS 250 won't give you that option.

Except that Eyefinity or DX11 are going to make the 5750 and 5770 struggle (especially at higher resolutions).

9800GT = 8800GT basically

the 9800GTX is a small step down from the GTS250

the 9800GTX+ is basically the GTS250

thank nvidia for hiring 12 year old to name their video cards. can't wait for the 9800GTX++ and 10800GT to come out....

You didn't hear? :(  They canceled the 10800GT... but the new version will be called the 999986 LE. They decided to skip a few number series for the sake of improving performance. It's worth the wait though, cause it has 358,000 SPs. :)  Starting price will be $4.3 million!
