ok y is (1) 5970 better than (1) 480
but
(2) 480s is better than (2) 5970s

cause thats what a few benchmarks are showing.

mainly because of scaling past 1 GPU's is horrendous (less return per gpu as you add more)

^+1, the HD 5970 is two HD 5870s underclocked to HD 5850 speeds, and therefore it performs like an HD 5850 in CrossFireX. However, dual GPU scaling is OK, while quad CFX is quite buggy and can actually provide lower rates.

The GTX 480 is beaten by the HD 5970, although when you add another GTX 480, it scales much better than four HD 5870s.

@ lower resolutions the 5970CF will obliterate 480SLI, @ 2560x 1600 or higher the 480's will be faster (also depends on game)

Bottom line, SLI scales better than CF so with this in mind it would be wiser to choose dual 480's over dual 5970's if you can take the heat and power draw. You will also save around 350.00/400.00$ if you decide to go with the 480's.

@OvrClkr i wouldn't even attribute this to the lower scaling of crossfire (in most games), i would say its because its 4 vs 2 gpus scaling (4 gpu scaling is pretty terrible)

though its a little weird that the SLI 480's come closer at higher resolutions

agreed with the getting dual 480's, as if you get the right motherboard you may be able to add a third down the line

Yup, and the fact that you are not going to buy dual 5970's to run @ 1680x 1050 res anyways :na:

Here is another thread that talks more about the 5970CF :
