Hi lads & ladies,

I need to buy a desktop replacement laptop with the following specs:
- AMD64 3000+
- 60GB HD @ 7200rpm
- don't mind about soundcard and graphics card
- don't mind about weight
- 1GB 400Mhz DDR RAM (not sure if this is compatible with AMD64 MB but
don't mind 333Mhz either)
- 15.4" WSXGA screen (1680x1050)
- a CD burner/DVD reader is enough

I know there's the Acer Ferrari but I've heard it heats up a bit on
the palm rest and don't like it's 5400rpm HD; also Compaq ships the
Presario R3000Z but it has a 5400rpm HD as well.

Can you please help me finding the laptop I'm looking for?

Thanks,
Lorenzo

A 60 gig 7200 RPM notebook drive goes for $139 and shipping. I wouldn't let
the drive be a show-stopper if everything else was right.

Why do you want such a low-grade CPU? Are you running 64-bit software?

Crucial.com sells RAM cheaper than does any laptop retailer. If you
want a fast memory controller, you might want to look at the Dell
Precision M60:
http://www1.us.dell.com/content/pr [...] /precn_m60

Unfortunately, the M60 does not ship with CPUs as slow as AMD64.
Perhaps the machine could be slowed down to AMD64 speed by
continuously running virus-checking software.

The A64 is by no means a slow cpu. I agree with you that the Pentium M is
probably the best notebook cpu (fast and cool) but that doesn't change the
fact that the A64 is no slouch.

I'd like to install a GNU/Linux 64bit distro such as
Fedora/SUSE/Gentoo/Slack and play around with Oracle on those

No way cheaper of the RAM that you buy with the PC (but I do check every
time Crucial RAM upgrades everytime I see a laptop configuration that
might suite me.

I don't want a Centrino. It's too expensive for what you get. I need a
desktop replacement that still stays cool and the least noisy possible.
I admit that Centrino runs as fast as any other modern CPU on desktop
apps but is not by any mean comparable with AMD64 or P4. I've been
interested in the DELL 9100 for a while but I think it might be too
noisy for my tastes. My ideal notebook would be a DELL 9100 with AMD64.

You are confused: the AMD64 is the fastest CPU available today for
consumer use, desktop or notebook, which is notable since Windows XP 64
is not even finished yet. Intel has no equivalent available to compete
with the AMD64 since it's own efforts at maxing the P4 and developing a
working 64bit AMD-killer have both failed miserably. It is rumored that
Intel has licensed the AMD64 technology.

This scores about a 2.5 on the troll-o-meter. What are you using that is
faster than an AMD64? You own a mainframe or something?

In that case, I would look at the Sager 4750:
http://www.powernotebooks.com/spec [...] 0specs.php

The screen is larger than you want (17" ), but it can be equipped
with a 7200RPM hard drive and has a DDR400 memory controller.

Additionally, that particular Sager retailer I linked to has
a 10.00 rating from 808 reviews at:
http://www.resellerratings.com/topstores.pl

The 4750 only achieves 1-1.5 hours of battery life, so it
probably isn't cool and quiet, but I would guess that that
is par for the course when you choose an AMD64 laptop.

Whhops. Troll alert. Chris is either a blind Intel Fan boy, incompetent, or
just like to troll. I am sure OP knows, but theA64 is the most powerful
mainstream CPU currently available. Intel makes nothing to touch it.

Even then, unless it is Opteron powered, it is still pwned by AMD!

I see. So what AMD based machine beats a z990?

Fine, what Opteron machine beats Blue Gene/L, Columbia, Earth-Simulator,
MareNostrum, Thunder, ASCI 1, System X, the Blue Gene L prototype,
NAVOCEANO's eServer 655, Tungsten, ECMWF's eServer 690s, John Von Neumann,
the Riken Super Combined Cluster, the BlueGene/L DD2 Prototype, and Mpp2?

The first Opteron machine in the top 500 supercomputer list is number 17.
The highest place Cray is an X1 at number 29. The XT3 doesn't seem to
exist as an operational machine.

HP.com

HP zv5000z series or Compaq R3000Z series, then customize as you'd like.

R3000Z, AMD 64+ 3700, WSXGA, 1GB, 60GB, wifi/bluetooth, 8x DVD burner,
12-cell battery, 3.5" FDD = $1994.00

ZV500z as above, $1924.00 (no idea why the same company HP/Compaq,
sells the same laptop under two brands for two different prices.)

Cray shipped a 10 teraflop portion of an XT3 supercomputer to Sandia
on Oct. 25, 2004, as part of the Red Storm contract. That part will be
operational in January 2005. Near the middle of 2005, Red Storm will
have all of its cabinets in place and be capable of about 40 teraflops,
which would put it at number three on the above supercomputer list.
Near the end of 2005, when Red Storm is finished and has had all of its
10,368 single-core Opterons replaced with dual-core Opterons, it will
be capable of about 100 teraflops, besting every single computer on
the above list.

And by that time BlueGene/L should be fully configured and running more than
three times that speed. No doubt there will be other new machines brought
online. Further, BlueGene/L is a simple scaling of an established
design--the Cray relies on the delivery of a new processor and on that
processor achieving its performance objectives and on Cray's integration of
that processor to go as planned. Bunch of big ifs there.

Further, the numbers in the list are sustained throughput, not peak. You
can bet that claimed 100 teraflops is peak, not sustained.

Sorry, your dog still don't hunt.
