I recently installed new ssd drive and installed windows 7 on it. I am trying to format the old hard drive to remove windows 7 from it so that on boot only one version of windows is detected. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am able to boot up the new install of windows 7 on the ssd just fine. Bu formatting through disk management is unsuccessful.

Did you have the HDD disconnected when installing the OS on the SSD? If not then most likely the issue is that the MBR is still on the HDD and therefore it will not format.
